Operation in 2006 of the Terrorism Act 2000 Lord Carlile Berriew QC's report on the operation in 2006 of the Terrorism Act 2000 is published today. Lord Carlile is the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation. This report is written five years after his original appointment. The report can be downloaded here

Homeland and Border Security Seminar Lord Carlile QC, the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation and Head of Chambers at 9-12 Bell Yard will today address the Homeland and Border Security Seminar. ICJ publishes a major report on Sri Lanka by Michael Birnbaum QC In early August 2006 17 aid workers were shot dead in the Sri Lankan city of Muttur. In October of 2006 the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) appointed Michael Birnbaum QC as its observer to report on the inquest into the killings. Yesterday the ICJ published his 65 page report, the result of 2 visits to Sri Lanka and a detailed study of all available documents. In it he analyses both the inquest and the police investigation. Terrorism Panel Appointments Michael Birnbaum QC and Jonathan Kinnear have been appointed to the panel of Special Advocates in terrorism cases. Michael has been appointed to the panel of Leading Counsel and Jonathan to the panel of Junior Counsel.
9-12 Bell Yard has an established reputation in terrorism cases. Lord Carlile QC is the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation.

Rowing and Running for Charity Over two days in April 2007, Jonathan Kinnear and his wife Marlo will be doing a double marathon challenge in support of NCH, a national children's charity. On the 21st April, Jonathan will be rowing a marathon (42,194 metres) on the indoor rowing machines at Roehampton, and Marlo will run the London Marathon the following day.

Iraq War Crimes Trial Acquittal Jeremy Carter-Manning QC acted for a successful defendant in the 6-month court martial and war crimes trial held at Bulford Camp involving a death in custody in Iraq.

Success for 9-12 Bell Yard Privy Council Appeals Team On 6 – 7 December 2006, Michael Birnbaum QC argued 6 petitions to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and got special leave to appeal in 3 of them, an unusually high rate of success. They were all pro bono cases and involved a total of 9 men, each convicted in Jamaica of non-capital murder. He led a different member of chambers in each case – Stuart Biggs, Alex Ward and Andrew Vout in the 3 successful petitions and David Scutt, Felicia Davy and Nick Dunham in the 3 unsuccessful petitions. Preparatory work on the appeals for the successful petitioners continues.
