What happens when you start a Pupillage in Chambers?
On the first day of your pupillage there will be a short talk in the morning in Chambers with members of the Pupillage committee. If you are starting a 12 month pupillage you will receive your first cheque.
The Chambers Administrator will also meet you and give you information about the mechanics of Chambers.
You will have been put in contact with your pupil supervisor the weekend before you start and will therefore know where to find him or her at court following the induction.
Structure of Pupillage
During a twelve month pupillage at 9-12 Bell Yard a pupil will have three pupil supervisors: one every four month. During a third six pupillage a pupil will have two pupil supervisors: one every three months. The advantages of the system are:
Pupils get to know more members of Chambers
Pupils get to see a broader variety of work
Chambers are better able to assess pupils
Difference of personality have less significance than under a traditional system
12 month pupils have the advantage of starting their second six months with a pupil supervisor with whom they have built some rapport.
